Success Story – Legacy Collection

Legacy Collection is a jewellery store with a difference.  Charmaine Taylor, Founder and Jewellery Creator, took a leap of faith and acquired the original fencing from Robben Island Prison and has been turning it into symbolic items of beauty and hope, ever since.

JH: What is the background to your online business:

CT: Legacy Collection creates art and jewellery from the original prison fence from Robben Island that once held Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners captive. Now we are creating jewellery symbolising hope and the power of the human spirit and also has an environmental element to repurposing rusted metal into art and jewellery.

JH: How long have you had your Shopify store?

CT: 2 years.  We launched on Shopify in October 2015.

JH: What prompted you to start selling online using Shopify?

CT: My market is based mainly overseas and online, so the profit margin is better than selling in my retail stores. Online is simply the way to go. Shopify was referred to me by a friend who is also currently using it.

JH: How did you find the setup process?

CT: The set up took me about a week as I needed to set up a bank account which also took a few days. My only advice to newcomers is to be patient while doing the process as it’s all worth it once you get the hang of it. There were a few technical things I was a little frustrated with but the helpdesks and support were super helpful, I could not have managed the full process without them.

JH: If you’re able to let us in, what is in your business strategy for the next 12 months?

CT: For the next year we’re focussing on local as well as international. Nelson Mandela would have been 100 years old in July 2018. So there are some beautiful celebrations happening worldwide to celebrate his centennial year, his life and Legacy. So, I am doing some collectable limited edition items and doing some major online promotions to get clients to my online store.

JH: Do you use uAfrica’s shipping and/or multichannel? What do you use it for?

CT: I don’t use uAfrica at the moment, I use DHL shipping with a once-off standard charge for local as well as international.

JH: So, what will it take for you to use uAfrica?

CT: I am open to using your shipping service, but I might need your team to assist me with the set up.
