Setting up Real-Time Rates

The Real-Time Rates feature allows you to offer your customers the exact shipping rates that the courier will charge for the shipment.

Setting up Real-Time-Rates on uAfrica

  1. Firstly, you will need to enable Real-Time Rates as the type of Shipping Rate you would like to use. You can do this by going to the “Settings” sub-tab and selecting “Real-Time Rates” from the dropdown menu under “Choose the type of shipping rates to use”.
  2. Once selected, you are required to input a “Fallback rate” and a “Fallback rate name”. The Fallback Rate will show at checkout if, for some reason, the system cannot provide a live courier rate.
(It is important to note that if you make use of a custom courier account, not uAfrica shipping, then uAfrica will always just show the Fallback Rate, since live Real-Time Rates will not be generated for custom accounts.)
  3. Once enabled, you can edit and adjust these rates on the “Real-Time Rates” tab. To edit a rate, click on “Edit” on the right-hand side of the screen.

  4. For each Service Level, you can make adjustments to the live rate the system receives from the relevant couriers to accomodate for certain variables, such as insurance, a handling fee and so on.
    1. Service Level: This is a fixed field indicating the service level for which uAfrica will show rates for your customer at check-out. This field does not get displayed at check-out and is only for internal purposes.
    2. Provider: This is where you can select for what providers, or courier, the system needs to request rates from. For example if you select “The Courier Guy”, the system will only show rates received from The Courier Guy. If you select “Cheapest”, it will only show the cheapest rate received for this service level from the couriers that are supported for Real-Time Rates.
    3. Rate Name: This is the text that you customer will see at checkout describing the rate received. You can customise the rate name based on your own preferences; you can just state economy or maybe even The Courier Guy Economy (if you selected them as the only provider). See the below example of how this will display at check-out.

    4. Lead Time: You can activate this by selecting the checkbox next to “Show Estimated delivery date”. This will then show as part of the Rate Name. This estimated date is compiled based on (1) delivery time statistics generated by uAfrica for relevant service level, and (2) the Lead Time (in days) that you have added to this text box. See below example of how this will display at check-out.
    5. Insurance: If preferred, you can select that uAfrica include insurance cost to the rate we receive from the couriers, exclude insurance cost, or to display both options. The insurance cost will be calculated based on the order value (as per Shopify) and the insurance policy structure per courier.

    6. Sometimes merchants want to not only show a shipping rate that is the rate received from the courier, but also to charge a higher shipping rate that includes the cost of “handling” the shipment. This can be done by adding a handling percentage, a handling fixed fee or both.
Handling Percentage: The percentage that gets added here will be added to the rate that we receive from the couriers. For example, adding a handling percentage of 10%:
      Rate received for Economy = R 50.00 * 10% = R 55.00
Handling Fee: The Rand value that gets added here will be a fixed value that will be added to each rate received from the courier. Please note: if you also selected a Handling percentage, this amount will be added afterwards). For example, adding a handling fee of R 10.00:
      Rate received for Economy = R 50.00 + R 10 = R 60.00
    7. If you would like a certain service level not to be offered at checkout, simply untick the “Enable” button in your Settings.

  5. PREVIEW: This is just a summary of how the rates will display to your customer at check-out based on the above settings.
  6. Please note that these rates supplied are exclusive of VAT. Should your store be configured to always include VAT, you will need to add the 15% under “Handling Percentage”.

Real-Time Rates on Shopify

  1. Upon checkout, the customer can select the service level and/or rate they would like their order to be shipped with and proceed to payment.

  2. Once the order has been placed, the order is pulled through to your uAfrica account. The service level, and thus the real-time rate, chosen by the customer will always be specified on the order.
  3. The order can then be fulfilled. Again, the service level, and thus the real-time rate, chosen by the customer will be displayed above the courier rates generated for fulfillment.

  4. This allows you to choose a courier rate and service level that matches the one your customer has selected and paid for.
